Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King

The Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King (Research Center for the History of the Nanyue Kingdom of the Western Han) is a large-scale archaeological site museum built around the major archaeological remains of the Nanyue Kingdom. A National First-Class Museum, it comprises two exhibition areas: the King's Tomb and the King's Palace. The King's Tomb area is located on Jiefang North RoadNo. 867, formerly the Western Han Nanyue King Museum; the King's Palace area is located at No. 316 Zhongshan Fourth Road, formerly the Nanyue King Palace Museum.

The King's Tomb area centers onthe Tomb of the Nanyue King Wen, discovered in 1983 — the highest-ranking, largest-scale and best-preserved painted stone-chamber Han dynasty tomb in Lingnan, from which more than one thousand

gold seal reading "Seal of Emperor Wen," the horn-shaped jade cup and the jade burial suit bound with silk threads, all of great historical value. The Tomb of the Nanyue King Wen is honored as

the"Gem of Lingnan Culture."

The King's Palace area centers on the site of the Nanyue Kingdom palace complex, which contains cultural layers from13 historical periods

spanning the Qin and Han dynasties to the Republic of China. Among them, the Nanyue imperial garden site — comprising the "stone-lined water pool" discovered in 1995 and the "winding stone canal" discovered in 1997 — is the earliest and among the best-preserved surviving example of a Qin-Han palace garden yet found. Both were selected among the "Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries of the Year," and the site of the Nanyue Kingdom palace complex was also included in the national special plan for the protection of major archaeological sites from the 11th to the 13th Five-Year Plan periods, hailed as "the essence of Guangzhou's historical and cultural city."The Tomb of the Nanyue King Wen and the site of the Nanyue Kingdom palace complex together showcase the political, economic and cultural development of the Lingnan region during the Qin and Han dynasties.
