Canton Tower

Canton Tower

Canton Tower stands at the intersection of Guangzhou's new central axis and the Pearl River scenic axis, facing Haixinsha Island—venue of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 16th Asian Games—and the city ofZhujiang New Town, Guangzhou's 21st-century CBD, across the river. It is currently the tallest sightseeing tower in China and the third tallest in the world. With a total architectural height of 600 meters—comprising a 450-meter main tower body and a 150-meter antenna mast—the tower showcases the soaring spirit, self-challenge and global vision of Guangzhou to the world.

Integrating urban sightseeing, high-altitude entertainment, fashionable dining, wedding and exhibition services, film and television entertainment, environmental science popularization, cultural education, shopping and leisure, Canton Tower Tourism Culture Development Co., Ltd. is dedicated to building Canton Tower into a world-class tourist attraction.

Design Inspiration

Throughout the history of tall structures, people's impressions have remained fixed on grandeur and sharp-edged forms. Beyond a relentless pursuit of height, the structural design has always followed the"wide at the bottom, narrow at the top" approach. Such an unchanging silhouette has long caused aesthetic fatigue, and people have been waiting for a breakthrough—a transformation from the chrysalis.

Canton Tower's fresh and elegant form caught the world's attention the moment it appeared. Unlike previous designers who stubbornly relied on symbolic traditional elements when interpreting Chinese culture, designers MarkHeimer and Barbara Kuit, a husband-and-wife team, expressed Eastern charm in a far more approachable way. The prototype of Canton Tower is a woman of slender, graceful proportions—a figure of ultimate beauty—yet this unique inspiration came from the human hip bone. To capture her slim curves and soft texture, Mark stretched elastic rubber cords between two elliptical wooden discs to simulate a three-dimensional form. When the top ellipse was rotated 45 degrees, a wonderful twisted shape emerged. That graceful lady, as if twisting her waist and glancing back, became the prototype of Canton Tower.
