Chu Chung Shing Tusk Carving Art Museum

Located on Guangzhou's Shamian Island, the Chu Chung Shing Tusk Carving Art Museum is a three-floor gallery housing a collection of over 1,000 mammoth ivory carvings. Zhu Zhongsheng is an important representative figure in the field of Chinese ivory carving, enjoying the reputation of "the world's number one master of ivory carving". At the same time, he is also a national inheritor of intangible cultural heritage and can be regarded as a national treasure level artist in contemporary Chinese ivory carving art. Under his skillful hands, the originally cold ivory was infused with vibrant warmth, and traditional techniques were revitalized with new vitality.

Shamian Island

The European style architectural complex in Shamian can be called an open-air museum, and strolling through it feels like traveling back to the concession time of a hundred years ago. Concession imprint: Shamian was once a British French concession, and the architectural complex witnessed nearly 100 years of history from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, with numerous public buildings such as hospitals, banks, and consulates.

Walk Two Steps and Cross! The Museum of Chinese and Western Architecture That "Speaks"

Shamian Island and Beijing Road combine to create an open-air 'Dialogue of East and West' exhibition! The European-style mansions on Shamian are Instagram-worthy: Gothic spires, Baroque carvings, and sunlight dancing on the arcades—like a European town transported to Guangzhou. Meanwhile, the ancient Beijing Road lies beneath your feet, its glass-covered pavement layered from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China era, where every step feels like touching the rings of history. On one side, the 'foreign guests' of Western aesthetics; on the other, the 'local roots' of Lingnan culture. Every brick and stone tells a story of East-West collision, vividly more than any book could!

Overview

Itinerary

【Lychee Bay】

(Also known as Lychee Bay Creek) Located in the heart of Xiguan, Liwan District, it is a general term for the crisscrossing water network. Once known as the "Little Qinhuai," it is now a core scenic area carrying the thousand-year history and Lingnan culture of old Guangzhou. Here, one can enjoy waterscape views, savor authentic local food, and experience intangible cultural heritage.

Main Featured Attractions:

Longjin Bridge & Wen Pagoda: Longjin Bridge has an elegant shape, with boats often passing underneath, making it one of the iconic landscapes of Lychee Bay Creek. The adjacent Wen Pagoda carries strong cultural symbolism; three Zhuangyuan (top scholars) from the Qing Dynasty prayed here. The large banyan tree in the square is adorned with prayer ribbons, creating an atmosphere full of ancient charm.

Liwan Lake Park: The park retains about 400 meters of the old Lychee Bay Creek channel, with ancient trees providing dense shade on both banks, showcasing the natural scenery of Lingnan. One can stroll along the lake, view ancient buildings around the water system, and feel the tranquil atmosphere of Liwan. The park also provides direct access to Pantang Wuyue Ancient Village.

Lychee Bay Grand Stage: Free Cantonese Opera performances are held daily around 2 PM, offering a close-up experience of the charm of this intangible cultural heritage. The Liwan Museum comprises former residences like Chen Lianbo's and Jiang Guangnai's. Inside, visitors can learn about Liwan's history and appreciate the typical architectural style of Xiguan Grand Houses.

Dexian Fang: Located next to Lychee Bay Creek in the Yongqing Fang area of Liwan District, Guangzhou Dexian Fang is a comprehensive cultural complex transformed from two over-century-old Xiguan Grand Houses. It includes a boutique homestay and a Lingnan cultural experience hall, preserving ancient Lingnan charm while blending Chinese and Western styles. It's a great place to experience the slow life and humanistic aesthetics of Xiguan.

Yongqing Fang: A "benchmark for urban organic renewal" in the Enning Road area of Xiguan, Guangzhou. It revitalizes the century-old street through a "micro-renovation, repair the old as old" model, preserving the ancient charm of Lingnan architecture while injecting trendy cultural and creative vitality. It is a National 4A-level tourist attraction integrating history, intangible cultural heritage, food, and check-in experiences.

【Shamian Island】

Shamian Island is a humanistic landscape scenic area primarily featuring historical and cultural architecture. The island borders the Pearl River's Bai E Tan to the south, is separated by the Shaji Yong channel to the north, is about 862 meters long east-west, about 287 meters wide north-south, and covers an area of 0.3 square kilometers.

After the Second Opium War, Shamian Island became a British and French concession. The two countries began concession construction work here in 1859, relocating island residents, dismantling forts, and defining the island. At the end of 1941, Japanese puppet forces took over the concession, transferring management rights to the Wang Jingwei puppet government the following year. In 1943, the Vichy French government relinquished the French Concession, handing it over to the Wang puppet government. After WWII ended, the French Provisional Government officially announced the return of the Shamian French Concession to the Republic of China government. After liberation, Shamian Island returned to China.

The island retains the European design style of the 19th-century British and French concessions, with over 150 European-style buildings. Among them, 42 are particularly distinctive, in styles such as Neo-Baroque, Gothic Revival, Veranda-style, Neoclassical, and East-West eclectic architecture, earning it the reputation as an "Open-Air Architectural Museum."
